  • Therefore, modern and contemporary literature molds its imagination of human concerns in ways that often deliberately make use of, or call attention to, new kinds of media, communication, and information.

Why full lecture PowerPoints are not online for students:

 

  • As is often the case in humanities courses, the PowerPoints in English 25 are not in themselves self-sufficient substitutes for lectures. They are a kind of "wireframe" diagram of ideas that the professor fills in during lectures with contextual statements, connective transitions, analogies and anecdotes, and other reflections. In general, humanities courses tend to rely more on such real-time "filling in" of their intellectual wireframe diagram because they explore issues and works that open into historical, cultural, and philosophical contexts with no clear external boundaries and many interior complexities. Issues and works must thus often be interactively "thought through" in a stage-by-stage, back-and-forth, and pro- and con- way. Put simply, it's the job of the professor's real-time explanation and narration to carry the lesson. In other words: you had to be there.
  • In order to encourage students to be there for the lectures, therefore, PowerPoints for English 25 are not online. The "Lecture Supplementary Materials" provided on the course site provide many of the materials, topics, and points raised in the lectures as a study guide. But they do not substitute for the actual lectures.
  • In addition, PowerPoints often contain many images, audio, videos, and other material for which the professor has not cleared permissions for online reproduction.
  • Also, PowerPoints are lecture plans that are the professor's intellectual property. Professors want to have some control over the way their lecture notes are used by online audiences, which often include not just their own students but a variety of commercial online companies, "click-bait" algorithmically-generated web pages, and other third parties in the business of harvesting study materials and commodifying them.
  • Note: professors are aware that all these issues are fluid in today's digital age when there are new ways of thinking about the competing demands of closed versus "open" resources, intellectual property versus "access," and so on. While the digital transformation is evolving, however, professors and the universities they are part of want to have some agency in the way they engage with all the other stakeholders in the debate, including the corporate and government players in today's era of "knowledge work."
